Preview Sessions From Patricia Meloy, a Spanish teacher at Barrington High School in Barrington, Illinois: "To help struggling students, I hold PREVIEW sessions instead of REVIEW sessions. I invite all students to a 10-15 minute session outside of class and give them a sneak-peek at the upcoming unit. I prep them with questions I will be posing to the class, model sentences, and give tips on how to listen and participate well on the days the lesson will actually be presented to the class as a whole. The struggling students appreciate the inside scoop on what's coming up and begin participating actively in class (much to the surprise of the wiz-kids who now are not always the first ones with their hands in the air!). As a beginning teacher, these preview sessions help me see where the potential trouble spots might be when I present the lesson in class. The self-esteem factor makes these very popular sessions and I have less behavior problems with freshmen and sophomores." |
